TrapEase 3_Family_wspotter

FastenMaster TrapEase 3

Last week, we shared information about FastenMaster TORX TTAP used by FastenMaster Cortex and FastenMaster TrapEase 3. This week, we want to take a closer look at the FastenMaster TrapEase 3. It’s a versatile deck screw designed for use with composite, PVC, and capstock decking. The FastenMaster TrapEase 3 provides a clean, finished look with a quick, streamlined install.

The TrapEase 3 uses the TORX® TTAP® Drive System which makes the screws stick easily and drill in without wobble and without stripping — no pre-drilling required. The screw drives into the deck board easily and leaves no mushrooming effect.

Each box comes with the bit and spotter lid. The spotter lid makes it easy to have perfectly placed screws, for straight or angled decking, and provides a consistent install with a great finished look. The screws come in 75, 350, and 1050 piece boxes which will cover 20, 100, and 300 square feet of deck, respectively.

The TrapEase 3 is available in an array of color painted screws to match popular decking boards. A corrosion warranty lasts for the life of the project.  If you’re looking for a versatile screw that installs fast and clean into composite, PVC, and capstock–the TrapEase 3 is perfect. We have FastenMaster TrapEase 3 at DIY Home Center.

Protect Your Investment with DeckWise JOIST TAPE!

As every homeowner knows, your deck is a significant investment!  In addition to investing in high quality decking, it is equally as important to protect your deck structure. What better way to protect your investment than by creating a waterproof barrier to help stop decay and wood rot?  DeckWise JOIST TAPE is a self-adhesive deck flashing & anti-corrosion barrier made to block moisture and maximize the life of your new deck or restoration.

Prevent Wood Rot and Decay

Prevent Wood Rot and Decay

Rot is caused by moisture that stays in contact with lumber deck framing and the above decking material. When this tape is applied, it creates a water proof seal that blocks contact with water and stops wood rot! Wood decay also occurs when deck screws penetrate the deck board, thus piercing the joist sub-framing. The joist tape seals around decking screws, blocking the primary water pathway into deck joists.

DeckWise JOIST TAPE has multiple applications and is recommended for use on joists, posts, ledger boards, cut ends and more. Additionally, it can be placed between treated lumber and metal surfaces to prevent corrosion of the metal from contact with treated lumber.

Professional builders will appreciate that DeckWise JOIST TAPE is a malleable polyethylene waterproof wood flashing and material with a rubberized asphalt adhesive. DIYers at home will know that once the tape is applied it blocks moisture, prevents wood rot and extends the life of your deck for years to come!

Like DeckWise Ipe clips, screws and all other DeckWise products, you can count on the best in decking tools and accessories. Their Made in America products are known for dependability and ease-of-use.  Make your deck structure as much of a priority as your high quality decking and protect your investment with DeckWise JOIST TAPE!

How To Hide a Well Cover (and more) In Your Yard

Do you have something to hide? That’s what Dekorra Products wants to know. Because if you do, they have a solution for you–a hard-to-tell-it’s-not-real rock cover.

Faux Rock Covers

Faux Rock Covers

Chances are you’ve seen a faux rock cover over a well cover or a septic cover, but how about a pressure tank or a pool filter? Even for large size items, Dekorra Products has a rock enclosure to conceal it.

Dekorra’s rocks come in several colors, autumn bluff, sandstone, riverbed, and fieldstone. There are a variety of different sizes and shapes to use depending on what you’re covering. The enclosure can be secured to the ground with heavy-duty stakes (included with each model) and a reinforced edge lets them withstand 100 lbs of pressure per square inch.

Dekorra is a Wisconsin-based company with a mission to conceal unsightly items in residential and commercial landscapes. They succeed with well-designed rock enclosures which replicate natural boulders and blend in with the landscaping.  Not to mention, all Dekorra rocks are made in the USA.

Take a look in your yard. Do you have a well cap or septic cover? Maybe an unsightly electrical box or irrigation pipes? Cover it up! Measure it and get the perfectly sized Dekorra rock enclosure to hide it.

How to Install Deck Boards Easily (Fastener Free and Without Gaps)

Marksman EdgeMaybe easy isn’t the right word, but there are a variety of tools available to make more efficient work of deck board installation while providing superior fastener-free results. CAMO makes many of these tools, but their newest one, the Marksman Edge is different from the rest.

The CAMO Marksman Edge tool not only gives you a fastener free surface, but it also gives you a zero gap surface–without splitting, cracking, and without a high price tag. The Marksman Edge is designed specifically for pressure treated lumber.

To help you decide if this tool is for you, here’s a quick overview of how to use it.

What You Need

You’ll need a drill set to its highest speed, the CAMO Marksman Edge, CAMO Hidden fasteners (use 1-7/8″ for 3/4″ – 1-1/4″ deckboards; use 2-3/8″ for 1-1/2″-2″ deckboards), and optional secondary spacers if a gap is desired. Of course, you’ll need pressure treated lumber, too.

Installation Overview

Begin the installation with the board that abuts the structure and fasten the outside edge to the joist. You might need to face fasten or use an L bracket from beneath the structure to fasten the inside edge of the abutting board.

The CAMO Marksman Edge has a magnetized screw guide which holds the screw in place. When driving the screws into place, keep the tool face flat on the surface of the deck board and the screw guide tight to the edge of the deck board.

You’ll use both hands, gripping the driver drill in one hand and holding the Marksman Edge in the other. Keep the Marksman Edge tight to the board to maintain the screw angle and run the drill at full RPM. The screw will spin and auger the surface–do not force it–after a moment the screw will pull into the board.

Repeat this process down the length of the board to secure the deck boards to the joists and create a gap-free, fastener-free deck surface. You’ll be impressed with the results.

We think this is a great tool for efficiently getting a gap- and fastener-free deck surface, so we’re making sure that we have plenty in stock for the upcoming deck season. Get your CAMO Edge now at DIY Home Center.

CAMO Fasteners Approved for use with DuraLife Decking

DuraLife has approved CAMO for use with their high quality decking products.

We like the CAMO Hidden Fastening System because it’s easy to work with and produces great results. CAMO’s Marksman Pro–and their high quality screws–help fasten deck boards quickly and efficiently. DuraLife is another outstanding product known for it’s durability and strength.

With CAMO being approved for use with DuraLife, that means that not only is the product compatible, but that DuraLife thinks the results are so good that they recommend CAMO to be used with their product. So, if you’re considering a deck using DuraLife, you should also consider hiding your fasteners using the CAMO Hidden Fastening System.

When it comes time to selecting the correct CAMO fastener, CAMO has you covered with this guide (pdf).

How to Groove Your Own Deck Boards (It’s faster than you think!)

You might think that you need to have grooved deck boards to get a fastener-free deck surface with the TigerClaw TC-G fastener. But you can cut your own grooves in regular decking boards–and you can do it quickly!

The main tool required is a handheld router using a 5/32” bit (the video below shows the TigerClaw TC-G Slot Cutter). You’ll also want some safety glasses, a few clamps to hold down the decking boards on the deck surface, a tape measure, and a pencil.

As you see from the video, only a few steps are required:

  1. Measure 13/32” from bottom of board and mark with a pencil
  2. Adjust the router and do a sample cut at the pencil line and test to make sure the TigerClaw TC-G clip fits tightly in the groove as shown in the video
  3. After ensuring a correct measurement and cut, cut your grooves in the boards either at the location a groove is required or groove the entire board
  4. Install the TC-G clips as directed

The FastenMaster cut 8 slots in 12 seconds–only 24 seconds additional labor on every 20’ deck board and an extra 16 minutes for a 400 square foot deck. Much faster than installing deck boards with screws. (Not to mention those extra DIY bonus points you get for cutting your own grooves!)

Check out DIY Home Center for the TC-G clips and the slot cutter router and get this project started!
