How to Put the Trex Clip on the Tiger Claw Install Gun

Customers have been asking us about getting the Trex clip on the Tiger Claw install gun. If you’ve been having this problem, you’re not alone!

The trick? Don’t look at the wire on the side. Instead, hold the gun like you’re going to use it and then put the clip on. Take a look at this simple video to see what we’re talking about:

We hear there will be a redesign in the future, but in the meantime, this short Youtube video helps.

How to Groove Your Own Deck Boards (It’s faster than you think!)

You might think that you need to have grooved deck boards to get a fastener-free deck surface with the TigerClaw TC-G fastener. But you can cut your own grooves in regular decking boards–and you can do it quickly!

The main tool required is a handheld router using a 5/32” bit (the video below shows the TigerClaw TC-G Slot Cutter). You’ll also want some safety glasses, a few clamps to hold down the decking boards on the deck surface, a tape measure, and a pencil.

As you see from the video, only a few steps are required:

  1. Measure 13/32” from bottom of board and mark with a pencil
  2. Adjust the router and do a sample cut at the pencil line and test to make sure the TigerClaw TC-G clip fits tightly in the groove as shown in the video
  3. After ensuring a correct measurement and cut, cut your grooves in the boards either at the location a groove is required or groove the entire board
  4. Install the TC-G clips as directed

The FastenMaster cut 8 slots in 12 seconds–only 24 seconds additional labor on every 20’ deck board and an extra 16 minutes for a 400 square foot deck. Much faster than installing deck boards with screws. (Not to mention those extra DIY bonus points you get for cutting your own grooves!)

Fast Grooved Board Decking Installs With The Tiger Claw TC-G Installation Gun

Tiger Claw TC-G

Tiger Claw TC-G

For grooved board decking, it’s hard to beat the Tiger Claw TC-G hidden deck fastening clip. It’s fast, easy to use, provides automatic 3/16” board spacing, and there won’t be a fastener in sight, assuming you use the Cortex FastenMaster for your perimeter boards.

But if you’re a professional, or just a DIY enthusiast who knows the value of having the right tools for the job, we recommend investing in the Tiger Claw Pneumatic Installation Gun to install grooved deck boards with TC-G clips at light speed.

Check out the video below that shows a regular hand drill versus the Tiger Claw Pneumatic Gun:

As you can see in the video, the TC-G clip can be installed with the installation gun in four simple steps:

  1. Place the clip on the nose, prong side up.
  2. Put the clip under the groove in the decking.
  3. Rest the gun flat on the joist, push down, and pull the trigger.
  4. Slide the gun to the right to free it from the clip.

If you make a mistake, a cool feature is that the installation gun uses scrails–a screw nail–that drives in like a nail and can be removed like a screw, making it easier to back out of installs.

The Tiger Claw Pneumatic Installation Gun is not just for the TC-G–it’s also compatible with the following clips:

The gun can be powered by a standard CO2 tank, with the recommended pressure being 80-100 PSI.

When you combine the TC-G clip with the Tiger Claw Pneumatic Installation Gun, you get fast, professional installation, compatibility with other great clips, and, of course, the satisfaction of using a cool power tool to create a beautiful fastener-free deck surface.

We have everything you need to get this project started right away–it’s all at the DIY Home Center.

How To Create A Fastener Free Deck with TigerClaw TC-G & Cortex FastenMaster

Even with a hidden fastener system, there are a few areas where, due to the limitations of the hidden fastening tool or system, you can’t hide the fastener. Some might consider this the “Persian Flaw” of their deck, but if you want perfection–a smooth, beautiful fastener-free deck surface–you’ll want to check out the new FastenMaster video, the TigerClaw TC-G, and the Cortex FastenMaster for decks and trim.

The FastenMaster video is only four minutes long and shows you how the TigerClaw TC-G and the Cortex FastenMaster work together to hide every fastener on the deck surface.

For the field of the deck, the TC-G Fastener works great. But when it comes to the first board, the last board, perimeter boards, and stairs, if you didn’t have the Cortex FastenMaster, you’d have to settle for visible fasteners.

The video shows how you can use the Cortex FastenMaster to hide all fasteners, even in those troublesome spots.

The Cortex FastenMaster System is extremely straightforward. It comes with screws, a setting tool, and a plug that’s made from the same material as the decking board.

Using the Cortex screw and setting tool, drive the fastener without pre-drilling. Then set the plug with a hammer. A final, and optional step, is to look away, and then look back again and see if you can find it.

It practically disappears.

This, of course, is exactly what you want—a completely smooth, fastener-free deck surface that looks great.

Be sure to check out the video. When you’re confident you can handle this project, the DIY Home Center has you covered—we have both the TigerClaw TC-G and Cortex FastenMaster available now. Use our decking color cross-reference to find the perfect color match for your deck.

Guest Post: Know When to Use TigerClaw Butt Seam Clips

By Greg Hartman, National Account Manager, FastenMaster Division

Most deck builders will try to avoid having two boards butt end to end on any deck project. However it isn’t always possible. Decks that are more than 20 feet long, and most decks built with random length lumber will always require boards be joined end to end. Hidden deck fasteners cannot always accommodate these butt seams. In the past, builders would either have to sister a joist below the butt seam, create their own solution or bridge the seam with a single fastener. Attaching a sister joist below every butt seam is time consuming. A homemade solution can be equally time consuming and may be questionable in its integrity. Bridging two board ends with a clip meant as a single board/joist fastener is never going to hold as well as it is meant to.

TigerClaw Sister Joist

Butt Seam with TC-G and Sister Joist (Old Method)

Tiger Claw has developed a solution for the butt seam issue – the TigerClaw Butt Seam Clip. The Butt Seam Clip is a mirror image of the TC-G. Using this clip in conjunction with the TC-G allows a builder to install the two clips side by side on a single “2 by” joist. This TigerClaw Butt Seam Clip is equal to the TC-G in speed, ease of use and strength.
Tiger Claw TC-G is one of the most widely used hidden deck fasteners for all types of grooved deck boards. The speed and ease of installation, the versatility, the strength and hold down power make this a builder’s favorite clip.

The Butt Seam Clip comes in handy for two other applications.

Butt Seam with TC-G and Butt Seam Clip (New Method) – No Need for Sister Joist!

Butt Seam with TC-G and Butt Seam Clip (New Method) – No Need for Sister Joist!

  • When the ends of the deck planks are going to be cut flush to the joists for a flush fascia or trim. Use the TC-G on your right outer joist and the Butt Seam Clip on your left outer joist to keep the fastener well inboard and out of the way of your circular saw.
  • When the builder runs out of TC-G clips and only needs a couple dozen clips to finish the job. Instead of having to buy the 90 clip bag of TC-G he can now buy this less expensive bag of 55 Butt Seam Clips to finish the job.

Every bill of materials for a grooved deck installation should include at least one bag of TigerClaw Butt Seam Clips.

Deck Board Gapping for Tiger Claw Hidden Fasteners

One of the most common questions that we receive is about the gap size that is created by the Tiger Claw Hidden Fastening System.  While the gap produced is marked clearly on our product pages, we thought it would be beneficial to list the gapping of all fasteners in one place for easy reference.

Tiger Claw Deck Board Gap Reference Chart

Product Gapping Contraction and Expansion Notes
TC-1 and TC-2 for Soft Wood Up to 1/4″ Boards should be installed tight together and allowed to “shrink gap” over time. Fasteners are designed to allow wood decking to expand and contract naturally by sliding on the fastener prongs and still maintain hold down strength. From the original point of installation TC-1S and TC-2S can handle up to  1/4 inch of contraction.
TC-3 for Composites 3/16″ TC-3S automatically creates a gap between each decking board slightly greater than 3/16”. With the use of spacers or shims, TC-3S can support gapping up to 5/16”. TC-3S is designed to allow decking to expand and contract naturally by sliding on the fastener prongs and still maintain hold down strength. From the point of installation, the TC-3S Fastener can handle expansion up to 1/8” and contraction up to 3/16″
TC-4 for Hard Wood 1/8″ TC-4S will automatically create a 1/8” space between each board. Fasteners are designed to allow decking to expand and contract naturally by sliding on the fastener prongs and still maintain hold down strength. TC-4S can handle total board movement up to 1/8th of an inch.
TC-G for 1″ Grooved 3/16″ TC-G will automatically create a 3/16” space between each board. The TC-G allows decking to expand and contract naturally by sliding on the fastener tab and still maintain hold down strength. The TC-G is also designed to maintain consistent spacing as deck boards expand and contract.
TC-120 for 3/4″ Grooved 1/8″ The TC-120 will automatically create a 1/8” space between each board. Fasteners are designed to allow decking to expand and contract naturally by sliding on the fastener tab and still maintain hold down strength. TC-120 is designed to maintain consistent spacing as deck boards expand and contract.
ProClip for Azek 1/8″ ProClip will automatically create a 1/8” space between each board. Fasteners are designed to allow decking to expand and contract naturally by sliding on the fastener prongs and still maintain hold down strength. Cellular PVC decking experiences very little expansion and contraction as temperatures change.

Cypress Deck Fastener Questions Answered!

Hard or soft, light or dark, oily or dry, the world of wood offers a wonderfully wide array of options for construction. Cypress, native to many areas of the United States and used to by settlers to build shelters in colonial times, is known for its remarkable ability to weather variations in temperature and moisture. The cypress tree produces cypressine which acts as a natural preservative while repelling insects. As a result, cypress is a popular wood in building structures like decks and fences.

Tiger Claw understands the needs of such softer woods and has developed superior products to enable builders to produce a smooth nail free surface to emphasize the beauty of a deck’s wood while respecting the wood’s composition. Because cypress wood may be installed either green or kiln dried, questions about the proper Tiger Claw fastener choice arise.

Advice, direct from Tiger Claw

Tiger Claw TC-1S

Tiger Claw TC-1S, a fastener choice for green cypress wood

Cypress can be used for decking when it is still green and has a high moisture content. In this situation, Tiger Claw recommends their TC-1S or TC-2S hidden fasteners because they allow the boards to be installed tightly together. As the boards dry, they shrink creating a gap between each board. From a design perspective, the TC-1S or TC-2S are identical fasteners. While TC-1S is made from heavy gauge steel with a Magni 599© black sealer topcoat, the TC-2S is made from annealed stainless steel  – guaranteed to never rust – with a black oxide sealer topcoat.

Cypress may also be kiln dried before installation, and in this case, we would recommend the Tiger Claw TC-3S to create a gap between the boards during installation. This is needed because the boards will likely expand as they acclimate to a more humid environment.
