As a homeowner or builder, it can be difficult to be sure a deck is built to code. It’s possible that a long-time code may change or a violation can occur during deck construction. The risks of a deck not built to code include damage to property or even injury. To make sure your project complies with all codes, stay up-to-date on current building regulations.
A new regulation change is the lateral load requirement being enforced under Section R507 of the 2015 International Residential Code. This change includes new methods for making lateral load connections on decks. The new methods make it easier and faster to install connections that meet deck lateral load requirements.
To help builders and DIYers capitalize on this opportunity, FastenMaster has released a new system that uses the new methods. It’s called the FastenMaster Lateral Tension System, or LTS for short. It is a complete kit that includes all 4 lateral load connectors a deck needs. LTS is a lateral load resistance system that is designed to transfer the lateral forces on a deck to its attached structure. The deck tension ties are each built to resist 750 pounds in tension and should be installed in four evenly spaced locations along the length of the ledger. Watch the video below to get a better idea of how the LTS system works.
FastenMaster LTS works by securing the plate to the deck joist with 8 small screws. Then, it connects the plate to the structural framing member inside the house with 1 long screw. LTS is easy to install, as it provides the option to either apply the screw or the bracket first. It can also be used with or without blocking and doesn’t require access to the interior of the house. This means that a solid connection can be made in seconds. LTS is adjustable for use in the 5 most popular installation conditions.
Condition A: Sill Plate or Wall Plate Behind Ledger.
Condition B: Sill Plate or Wall Plate Directly Below Ledger.
Condition C: Sill Plate or Wall Plate 2” – 5” below Ledger.
Condition D: Wall Stud in line with Deck Joist.
Condition E: Wall Stud between Deck Joists.
To guarantee your safety and the safety of your friends and family, make sure your deck meets building code requirements with the FastenMaster Lateral Tension System for Decks. Protect your investment by avoiding costly deck repairs and making all of the right connections in the first place.
