Starborn Industries Screws and Fasteners – Now Available at DIY Home Center

DIY Home Center is thrilled to announce that we have just started carrying quality products by Starborn Industries. We think Starborn fasteners and screws are a great addition to our wide selection of decking products. At DIY Home Center, we are committed to being your one-stop resource for all of the materials you need to create a beautiful, luxurious deck.

Pro Plug System

The Starborn Pro Plug system is used for decks, trim and wood projects, popular choices are composite deck plugs and wood deck plugs. This is a two-piece fastener system. First, you drill a long wood screw into the wood, leaving it about 1/2 below the surface. Then, you top the screw with a dab of wood glue and top with a wooden plug. Not only does this system hold the wood boards in place for years to come, it creates a smooth, seamless deck surface. You also don’t have to worry about rust stains from the screws coming into contact with rainwater and melting snow. The screws in the Starborn Pro Plug system are available in two lengths — 1 5/8″ and 2 1/2″.

Headcote Screws

Another popular Starborn product that we’ve added are Headcote screws. These fasteners are used for hardwood, cedar, redwood and pressure-treated decking. They feature color-matched heads so that the fasteners blend in with the flooring, decking or baseboards. The color finish is added using a powder-coated technique where the color actually fuses to the metal. This means that you don’t have to worry about the color chipping or flaking, even in heavy traffic areas. Starborn Headcote screws are available in many different hues.

FastenMaster Cortex vs. FastenMaster TrapEase 3 – What’s the Difference?

You ask and we answer!  In response to the commonly asked question, what is the difference between FastenMaster Cortex and FastenMaster TrapEase 3 driver systems?  The answer is: a felt tip.

How to Remove a Cammed Out Deck Screw

Ugh. You’re putting practically all your weight into the drill, pressing hard into the screw, and it’s just slipping. It’s called camout. It’s where the screw is rounded out, the bit doesn’t engage, and you get that stuck feeling.

FastenMaster’s Cammed Out Screw Tutorial on YouTube can help get you unstuck.

The concept is simple. Start with a bit one size up from the screw. Since most composites use a #1 square drive screw, you’d use a #2 square drive bit. Now, do the following:

  1. Use a hammer and a little controlled anger to firmly pound the #2 square drive bit into the cammed out screw head.
  2. Place a sleeve with a hex into your drill, making sure that the sleeve will fit snugly over the #2 square drive bit.
  3. Sleeve over the #2 square drive.
  4. Put your drill into reverse, on the lowest setting, and slowly remove the screw.

That’s it!

Now you can go ahead and grab a new screw–preferably one that’s not cammed out–and reinstall. Or, better yet, check out our selection of FastenMaster Deck Screws and never have this problem again!

How To Create A Fastener Free Deck with TigerClaw TC-G & Cortex FastenMaster

Even with a hidden fastener system, there are a few areas where, due to the limitations of the hidden fastening tool or system, you can’t hide the fastener. Some might consider this the “Persian Flaw” of their deck, but if you want perfection–a smooth, beautiful fastener-free deck surface–you’ll want to check out the new FastenMaster video, the TigerClaw TC-G, and the Cortex FastenMaster for decks and trim.

The FastenMaster video is only four minutes long and shows you how the TigerClaw TC-G and the Cortex FastenMaster work together to hide every fastener on the deck surface.

For the field of the deck, the TC-G Fastener works great. But when it comes to the first board, the last board, perimeter boards, and stairs, if you didn’t have the Cortex FastenMaster, you’d have to settle for visible fasteners.

The video shows how you can use the Cortex FastenMaster to hide all fasteners, even in those troublesome spots.

The Cortex FastenMaster System is extremely straightforward. It comes with screws, a setting tool, and a plug that’s made from the same material as the decking board.

Using the Cortex screw and setting tool, drive the fastener without pre-drilling. Then set the plug with a hammer. A final, and optional step, is to look away, and then look back again and see if you can find it.

It practically disappears.

This, of course, is exactly what you want—a completely smooth, fastener-free deck surface that looks great.

Be sure to check out the video. When you’re confident you can handle this project, the DIY Home Center has you covered—we have both the TigerClaw TC-G and Cortex FastenMaster available now. Use our decking color cross-reference to find the perfect color match for your deck.

Screw Products Inc. Screws Eliminate Common DIY Headaches

Here’s a tip for your next DIY project that involves screws: Use Screw Products star drive screws that virtually eliminate all of the common frustrations with using other screws.

Have you ever experienced any of the following?

  • Screws that “walk” when you screw them in so that they’re not in the right place
  • Screw heads that strip so you have to press extremely hard—or grab a pliers and try to twist it out
  • Always having to pre-drill holes (sure, you’ll still have to pre-drill sometimes, but much less than you would with an ordinary screw)

Star Drive Screws
Maybe you thought these were just inevitabilities of home improvement work. But they’re not.

Screws made by Screw Products bite into the material with less effort so you don’t have to be a bodybuilder to apply enough pressure to get the screw in. They feature Star Drive recess which can handle twice the torque as a Phillips or Square drive—no more stripping screws, or having the screwdriver slip off the screw (camout).

Screw Products screws have deep, wide threads that help the screw cut cleanly, which reduces splitting, cracking, and mushrooming.

Basically, all the problems you’ve had with traditional screws are eliminated with Screw Products. Also, if you’re thinking you’ll have to get a bit for the screws, forget it.

When you buy a 1lb., 5lb., or bulk jar of screws, not only do you get long-lasting, premium quality screws—you also get a free bit. Just open the jar and you’re ready to go.

Screw Products include cabinet screws, construction lag screws, finish screws, standard exterior screws, trim head screws, extra-long screws, heavy duty screws, multipurpose screws, pocket screws (compatible with Kreg Jig screws), composite decking screws, stainless steel deck screws, plus fascia and fencing screws. In addition, Screw Products include driver bits, bit holders, cement board screws, gutter screws, The Deck Clip, DeckLok, Reamer Tek Screws, Tapcon Screws and assorted screw kits.

Practically any project can benefit from Screw Products screws. That’s why we’re happy to stock Screw Products at DIY Home Center.  If you have any questions, call us at 888-349-4660 or leave a comment below.

Cortex by FastenMaster: Set the Screw, Set the Plug…And Your Deck is Set!

Hidden fastening systems all suffer from the weaknesses of increased complexity. All the various clips, brackets and other hardware are all subject to corrosion, improper installation and structural failure. This fact can be frustrating for homeowners and contractors alike as they plan construction of new or renovation of existing decks.

FastenMaster's Cortex Concealed Fastening System for Decking

FastenMaster’s Cortex Concealed Fastening System for Decking

FastenMaster has risen above the rest with the Cortex Concealed Fastening System. Cortex is the fastest, easiest way to conceal the heads of your deck screws on market-leading deck board types. Set the screw, set the plug, and you’re all set…you won’t even need to caulk, sand or paint!

Cortex offers a strong connection between the deck board and the joist and can conceal fasteners across the entire deck: first and last board, perimeter, and stairs. Available for popular decking brands, including Trex, TimberTech, Azek and EverGrain, the Cortex Hidden Fastener plugs are made from OEM manufacturer decking boards to ensure a proper color match. Each box of Cortex includes everything you need: screws, set plugs and setting tools; and can be easily installed with a standard drill.

Cortex’s simplicity is its strength. Nothing can beat the simplicity and strength of a through the deck board screw. Once the plug is installed, the screw is hidden and sealed off from the elements. When installed according to the instructions, these plugs are difficult if not impossible to find. End result: Your deck is strong and perfectly consistent in appearance. Now that’s a job well done.
